چکیده

Abstract The Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (NMAF) is recognized for the high degree of endemism its ichthyofauna, whose evolutionary and biogeographic histories are still poorly understood. Oligosarcus acutirostris a fish species endemic to NMAF, which distributed in coastal rivers streams draining Bahia, Espírito Santo, part Minas Gerais states eastern Brazil. Its widespread distribution currently isolated river basins along NMAF prompted this study, aimed understand what scenarios would be involved determining current pattern, contribute better understanding history NMAF. For this, mitochondrial nuclear DNA sequences were analyzed based on samples from different localities distribution, including type locality. Overall, phylogeographic analyses indicate strong genetic structure within evidenced mainly by non-sharing haplotypes between most analyzed. According AMOVA results, explained Pleistocene paleodrainages. results also used test complement hypothesis previously proposed drainages

Spatial and seasonal changes in the diet of Oligosarcus hepsetus (Characiformes, Characidae) in a Brazilian reservoir.

We assessed spatial and seasonal changes in the diet of Oligosarcus hepsetus in order to describe the strategy developed by this species that allows their very high abundance in Lajes reservoir, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fish samplings were carried out using gill nets, deployed during ca. 12 and 24 hours, between April 2001 and May 2002. A total of 289 individuals were examined, of which 97 showe...

Statistical phylogeography of Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans: testing biogeographic hypotheses of dispersal.

Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America. The disease, caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is commonly transmitted to humans by Triatoma infestans in South America. Using mitochondrial DNA sequences, we assessed alternative biogeographic scenarios of dispersal of T. infestans using coalescence simulations. We also assessed phylogeograp...

Monophyly of the Agoniatinae (Characiformes: Characidae).

The Characidae is the most diverse family of Neotropical fishes, currently encompassing more than one thousand valid species. Some subgroups within this family still lack phylogenetic definitions, being diagnosed on the basis of combination of characters, a common procedure in pre-cladistic studies. Agoniatinae, currently composed by two valid species, Agoniates anchovia and A. halecinus, is on...

Cytogenetic divergence in two sympatric fish species of the genus Astyanax Baird and Girard, 1854 (Characiformes, Characidae) from northeastern Brazil

The fish genus Astyanax is widespread throughout the Neotropical region and is one of the most species-rich genera of the Characiformes. Cytogenetic studies of Astyanax have revealed marked intra- and interspecific diversity, with the identification of various species complexes. In this report, we describe the karyotypic structure of two sympatric species of Astyanax (Astyanax sp. and Astyanax ...
